Night stroll while trying to overcome my fear of street photography in Cairo: After I took a picture on my scooter a guy ran towards me and asked me what I was doing so I explained how I like the way he decorated the cart. He looked at me in confusion and asked me to stop. I was curious to understand and asked him why. He said that there are journalists who present them in a negative way and it brings them in trouble. I decided to keep driving nervously and decided to stop by another cart, parked the scooter and tried another approach. There was a kid standing looking at me so I approached him and asked him if I could take pictures of the cart. He immediately asked me why and I repeated what I told the man from the previous cart. After a few seconds he went to the owner of the cart who seemed like in his mid thirties.I told him that I don’t have to show any faces if he’s not comfortable but it didn’t seem like an issue to him. Before taking any pictures I sat down, enjoyed the breeze and ordered some Termes.
I needed an extra plate for the peel of the termes but the guy said that I could just throw it on the ground. So I smiled and said I know but I still want to the plate. After eating I started taking these pictures. The kid was very curious and asked me why I am taking these pictures again. I started trying to explain to him that there was some kind of analog film in the camera that I wanted to try at night but it was hard to explain why he can’t see any pictures immediately. So he repeated and said yeah but why? I honestly felt like I’m doing something completely useless and joked about it with him. Before leaving I thanked the owner and found a garbage can attached to the lantern I was sitting next to so I took the schale and threw them inside. The metallic garbage can didn’t have a bottom anymore and all of my termes fell directly in the nile.
